In memory of Rook Hallan

Biography

Rook was born on the 20th of May, 1973 at Sanai Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She spent her early years living in the Southfield and Ann Arbor areas of southeastern Michigan.

She attended the Roeper School, the George School, and graduated from Huron High School. After her primary education, she attended Columbia University and Wayne State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.

For many years, Rook worked as a computer professional in and around the Detroit metropolitan area. She was responsible for developing software, as well as maintaining and administrating infrastructure at several firms. She had a long term love for computers and technology, that began in her youth with the first Atari, Commodore, and IBM computers that she used. This love grew to include a unique fondness for the DEC PDP series of computers.

Rook had a lifelong passion for tabletop role-playing and board games, which began in her pre-teen years. She was highly active in the Ambercon community as a player and gamemaster. She attended numerous annual regional conferences across the United States. Rook also participated in and organized many local and online gaming communities, including helping to shepherd a rebirth of the Wayne Weregamers while attending college.

Beyond her professional and gaming life, Rook had a deep passion for the arts. From a young age she was an avid reader of all forms of literature. She had a keen interest in theatre and music and enjoyed performing as a vocalist, actor, and DJ. In addition to performance, Rook was a patron of the arts and took great pride in supporting independent and up-and-coming artists from a wide range of mediums and styles.

Rook passed from the physical realm on the 3rd of January, 2020 at Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield Michigan. She is survived by her mother Terry and father Eric, as well as many loving friends and extended family.
